Re: antenna by scottyc2911
I can't see the problem? Physically they look well made, and are quite presentable. They don't appear to be super-gain, or some wonderful new design in antennas - but the usual sort of home brew antennas us hams often bridge up, in decent housings. The different designs all specific very typical specs - so you google the design, see if it does what you want - and then you can buy one in a nice package. The benefit seems to primarily be that you can attach a bit of cord and pull them up into trees and stuff like that? They're never going to be wonderful antennas, but he says they're for field days and outdoor temporary use - If I did such a thing, I'd probably buy one of these - the price is low enough to take a punt.

For those use regular silver rod. Will outperform that wire.

Re: antenna by scottyc2911
WRONG. I tested Scott's 5/8th live wire against a a99 back to back, both same height both fed with e.g. mini 8 and plugged into a kenwood 480hx. The live wire was no worse than the Antron but in most cases was 1/3 s points up on the half wave a99 This is based on my tests and not just pulled off the net so I can comment on fact and the results I had. These are quality built wire antennas and I recommend them for portable use.The halfwave antenna Scott builds is better on tx and rx than my silver Rod.

I'm really impressed, that you see 2dB difference in signal on 27MHz. What was the meter please?
Thanks for clarifying.
Chris
That explains a lot. There is not many antennas performing worst than A99.
Thanks for clarifying.

Re: antenna by scottyc2911
You're comparing a 5/8 wave wire against the A99 which is basically only a halfwave wire in a fiberglass tube. Stands to reason that the 5/8 wave would be better. If you were to compare the wire to a 5/8 wave silver rod I wonder what the results would be.ROTEL240 wrote: ↑30 Jun 2018, 19:38WRONG. Yes as expected the 5/8 should be better than the half wave but his half wave wire was better than the a99 as Chris says not the best antenna the kenwood meter on the radio was used to compare both antennas as they were both plugged into the radio.sickboy wrote: ↑30 Jun 2018, 22:56You're comparing a 5/8 wave wire against the A99 which is basically only a halfwave wire in a fiberglass tube. Ahhh..you said you'd tested a 5/8 wave, not a half-wave as you said you'd tested it against in the post above.
I'm confused, but it is relatively early

Yes that's right I have used both antennas half wave and 5/8 and also a T2lt wire antennas with good results as good as any commercial antennas. The Collector wrote: ↑01 Jul 2018, 09:17 Ahhh..you said you'd tested a 5/8 wave, not a half-wave as you said you'd tested it against in the post above.

Buy an antenna making book or do some research on the net
people who sell these antennas provide a service for those too lazy or unable to do so.
Depending on what you want to do with the mention bands its hard to say whats better. Build a yagi if you want dx or multi hop E's or stick a dipole up if your not fussed

They look like something you could knock up for a few quid on a kitchen table in half an hour with very basic hand tools, why would you want to pay a premium for a sticker?
For what he's charging you could buy a reel of coax, bag of cable ties and some plastic waste pipe and build yourself 10-20 of them...
The PSKReporter spots on the other products aren't anything to write home about either, I've had similar digi mode reports with a random bit of 1mm2 insulated (sorry Chris )wire slung up into a tree and 5W on 40M.
