Wilson 1000 any good?

Post by AxleJack » 29 Apr 2018, 06:47

I'm looking for a good mobile antenna with a mag base option.
In the past I was a K40 fan so I've set my sights on a Wilson 1000. I cant buy them where I live so I have to pay international shipping. Actually I can buy very bloody little where I am, but that's a whinge for another day. But a Wilson 1000 will come in at about UKP92.

What does everyone think of these? Are they as good as I am let to believe? Is there anything in a similar style/performance/price category I should also be considering?

I have never seen a Wilson before so I'd appreciate those with experience letting me know the story. Last 27MHz mobile antennas I used were K40, 9ft tank whip and a genuine Cherokee half breed. But that was 20 years ago. I still have the half breed but I've ruined it by trimming to 28.5MHz (doh!).

Cheers all
Jack

Apparently good quality but very expensive.

You could get a Les Wallen Modulator for about a quarter of that and there won't be much in it signal-wise.

I would guess that the modulator would work better as it is larger.

Personally I think the Wilson is overpriced, and would rather have a big Sirio. Cheaper and work better but still well made.

There is no such thing as a Fidelity 1000 which is too good to scrap.

Thanks for the input guys.
Yes agreed it is a touch pricey. And the Sirio looks real good too, but where I am the Sirio comes in at a similar price. More once you buy the mag base.

Still thinking about it.

I'm in Australia. So I can only buy items which the sellers are willing to post to me, and out up with the cost. Best option I have at the moment is wilson.

That Sirio is definitely the antenna I would buy if I was still in the UK. It looks a better option than the Wilson for a few reasons.
Unfortunately, once you add the cost of a mag base, which is included with the Wilson, and international post, then the price gets silly again.

Would a 6 or 7 inch mag base be strong enough for a 2m long whip?

yes i would say so dont need a 25 quid mag base there are magmounts out there for less than 14 quid that will do the job or if you can get a hold of a magmount were you are just buy the replacement so239 magmount cable kit its a shame i had one going spare you could have just paid postage for it could have put it in a jiffy bag job done , ask in the wanted section someone might have one , where there is a will there is a way :D

It depends... Can hold antenna at high speed, but can fail at 70kph when you pass truck in opposite direction.
After broken rear window and left lamp I quit using magnets for antennas on my car. They are good to put them on the fridge doors.
Chris
You can't have too many antennas...

6" mag should be okay for careful drivers with an average base-loaded twig, but get the 7" if it's a longer base-loaded one or centre-loaded at the least. A tri-mag's needed for a tank-whip or for driving like a loony ;)

Or drill a hole in your car roof like my hooligan self!

I've got the sirio 5000 and use it with the sirio 145 mag mount .Stays on the roof at 70 mph . I was fortunate in that I bought both of Radiozing when they were in business as they offered free P & P :) .

I saw a guy at a car wash I went to today that had a small 2 foot mag mount antenna and he went into a rotary brush car was with it still on top. it wrapped around the brushes and beat his car up. the car was operator had to shut it down to untangle the antenna out of the brushes. I had to set there while they cleaned the coax and antenna out of the car wash.
what a fool.
