Re: whats the best coax to use for patch leads.
That link is based on solid data - can't see anything to argue with, he's quite right. I guess the big thing that worries him is that while having a meter gives a good indication, the problem is that a good tool is little use if you don't understand how it actually works.
Who's getting heated? Seems a decent enough topic.
I suppose the real issue is to do with practicality. I've still got a bit of H100 cable on the go, and the dam stuff is like a hosepipe, and sticking a meter on the end of it means the meter feet won't touch the worktop! I've got a box of short jumpers - all kinds of random lengths and cable types, and when we're talking such short runs, differences are so tiny as to be a bit pointless.

Sorry Bernie, seems that I might have under estimated you.ch25 wrote:Kaos, my question wasn't simple enough for ya?Berniech25 wrote:So what is a loss of 10m rg8 @27MHz?
100ft is 30.48 metres give or take a few millimeters.
So lets take the 30.48m and divide that by 3 and we get 10.16 metres.
Now as we have divided the length by 3 we need to use the table I provided and divide the GIVEN VC by 3.
Let me see, lets use 28 Mhz. Close enough to make a very very very little difference.
Soooooooooo the given is 1.74 and that needs to be divided by 3 to get the 10m length. The answer in 0.58db
So the answer to the question, which maybe was to hard for you to understand is 0.58 db loss per 10m of RG8.
Nothing hard about the question. I gave you the blanks to use with your RG8 and 10m and given frequency.
Anything else you dont understand?

Great. We have some progressKaos wrote:The answer in 0.58db
According to my calculations it will be 0.24dB excluding loss on connectors, but whatever.
Next question to Tim. How do you notice 0.58dB loss in your antenna system? Notice, not measureTim wrote:Loss on those lengths will be unnoticeable, it's when you start going over 10 meters in length that loss will begin to be noticed.

Why ask me the question? I never mentioned anything about 'measure'.

So Tim, what are the symptoms of 0.58dB loss @27MHz in antenna system that everyone can notice or feel it and be able to recognize that serious loss issue over 10m of coax you mentioned.

What planet you on? I never said anything about any 'serious' loss issues over 10m of coax, now, I'm typing this very slowly just in case you can't read very fast, up to a length of about 10 meters there is no discernible losses, it is when you use lengths of OVER 10 meters that you MAY begin to loose dB. The greater the length, the more likely you MAY be to loose gain and the type of coax MAY influence the amount of loss as well.

Looks like there's a few people on their period here, what's all the nonsense about the loss on 10m of coax? The guy wants to know about a six inch run of it, so the answer George is so long as it's not the cheap nasty crap with tin foil instead of braid then use anything half decent and you'll be just fine.

Jesus is this still going? Patch lead...Best coax you can afford and short as possible. Sorted

LDF4-50 doesn't make good patch leads though, unless the idea is to hold the radio up too?

So in actual fact you could have worked it out yourself.ch25 wrote:Great. We have some progressKaos wrote:The answer in 0.58db

Buy an Antron 99 as it has a 9.9 dbi gain so use as bigger patch lead as needed.
I'll pay whatever i think it's worth...:-)
