I've also got access to the kit to make a magnetic loop Antenna - anyone got any info or advice on how these work on 27MHz?

I understand these pick up very little noise & don't have to be high up?

Make yourself a T2LT, it's basically a 1/2 wave vertical made from a length of coax cable, very cheap and performs. Mount it to a 10 metre roach pole, you'll also be able to take it portable.

Just a full-wave rectangular loop about 1005/freq in mhz.

Feed one of either side in the center and you'll have the quietest, best performer broadside and will still perform quite well off the sides with close to 1:1 swr,
if you use the 2.75:1 formula, 2.75 high x 1 wide = 1005/27.2 = 36' 11 3/8" / 7.5 = 59 1/8" = "1",
2.75 x 59.12 = "2.75" = 13' 6.5"
so...
1 = 59.125" wide
2.75 = 13' 6.5" tall - feed one side, half way up, for vertical polarisation by just splitting the coax, center goes up, shield down.

... a little shorter overall if the wire has a low Velocity Factor, and add a choke if you have RFi issues.
