just got a cobra 2000 gtl omg what have they done

Post by dt307 »

now a proud owner of a 2000 gtl
had a shock when i opened her kinda guessed why the tx audio was distorted.
what a hillbilly rough as hell butcher lol {bnghd}

lucky no tracks were cooked, looked 100x worse than it was. :D
removed the crap.
repaired the original faults due to a shorted driver i guess (a choke and vr ) re fitted the driver in the right place :wtf:
cleaned up the pcb but still a few issues lol
usb thinner than a match stick lsb good am is top notch
turn the coarse to the left and the vco quits
She will be as right as rain soon enough

Just shocking at how some one couldn't go to the effort to fault find the problem but found the time to chop out part of a board and hard wire it in

will add some pics tonight for you .its not the best example but will work out good in the end.
little issues to sort out before i decide to do any mods or if she is a keeper.
its getting time is the problem.
got the usb temp sorted had to pad the usb 7.8mhz ct with a little cap (will change the trimmer and crystal for a proper fix)
rewired the clarifier and no issues with the vco now (if it gets mods all the clarifier circuit gets disabled anyway)
got to replace the cut limiters remove the npc and a basic tuneup but as she stands she is working fine now

Looks good to me. Always wanted to own a tidy one of these. Good work saving it from the scrap heap.

Best looking radio ever made (in my opinion :))

Here's mine . Has a Maurer 3 band pic fitted to give LO/MID and HI bands , plus +5/10/15Khz switching to get all those pesky alphas :)

To be honest Chris , I've only ever bought 2 from Gerhard . One for an Adams that I had , and another for the 2000 . I've actually bought more pics from Nick I think :)

Good luck with it !

I'm the same with amstrads, Remember drooling over the spinneytronic version in my mums catalogue. Thought they looked different and modern compared to other rigs of the day and still do, But as you say, Each to their own.

Agree not every one cup of tea, most do go divvy over the gtldx mk2 and I hate them.
I've never fitted one of nicks pics but had a radio that had one in,it worked great I don't use them because I want to have the ability to work zeros without messing about, but I don't know yet which way I am going to do this one.
I am leaning towards fm and a dds board
Don't like digimax or lescom so only things left is a pll swap module as a pic or eprom won't work on a std 2000 as it's limited pll 64 channels iirc
