Always had a soft spot for the ol' Cybernet 134 boarded rigs. Good all rounder! Just change the Dev pot for a higher value and change the 2nd IF 455 kHz filter to a "HT" and you get a hi spec rig. And if you know what you are doing, you can set up the modulation to take advantage of its on-board speech compressor.

Audioline & Uniace were OK, but bassy TX audio that sounded like a cloth over the mouth with some people, lacking sensitivity, a bit too much hiss and treble on RX for my taste, and transmit and receive frequencies are about 1 kHz apart. Don't believe me do the maths! It did have a FET 1st mixer which makes it better for overload. The filters were bulk standard types found in most CBs at that time. So Uniden came up with a rig that was better than most of the terrible junk of the 80's, doesn't necessarily mean it was a high performer!! And typical of Uniden boarded rigs in general, suffers from malfunctioning meters and shorting out capacitors.

A malaligned rig of the 80's (if you pardon the pun) is the DNT M40FM Special. Very sensitive, FET front-end, crystal filtering, but sadly had quality control issues. They didn't say Do Not Touch for nothing!

Magpie 5000 was another good one. Excellent all rounder. Slighty down on sensitivity, but not much to distract from its glory.

And the Maxon/Danita/Pama mk5/Midland (#? with the golden knobs). That has a good front-end.

I found the typical Maxon-Maxcom 4E/30E-Midland 2/3/4001-Colt 295-Cobra21 typical rig variable in sensitivity. Some good and some not so good. Defo bleedover boxes!!

But at the end of the day it the antenna you have is the important factor and having fun :D I wish people didn't over deviate so much  Screwdriver experts, do something else with your hands

In the good old days of CB then a Uniden/Audioline was a must to stop the bleedover from other users..however now its all nice an peaceful then a Cybernet chassis type radio is the biz...

when im hill topping i take a Cybernet 300 with an old Racal speech processor an it does the biz....

I'm still on the side of the 134 boarded prestige radios as since this thread was started I've gotten into Mainland Europe with my binatone 5star. But just to put a cat among the pigeons.....I've also gotten there with my intek 490 multi standard radio. I like listening to my 5star better though. Since this thread was started a while ago, what radio did the poster end up with?

I've been using a Realistic TRC-3000 Navaho homebase, never been touched apart from a squirt of switch cleaner and I've been happy with the receive and I dont think it's Cybernet or Uniden boarded.
I think it just needs a base mic to go with it.

Homebase-wise maybe the Midland 76-900. More knobs, meters and switches than you'll ever need, even if you have a knob-fetish. oooerr missus ;) Those things cost about £250 when they first came out :o

Think i would agree with Mayhem , The last and i recon best 27/81 that i used before i moved on to sideband radios was a Audioline 341 . From my home in Hartlepool i recall talking to breakers in Scarborough to the south and North Shields to the north at 4wat on that 341 .

I'm out here flying my own flag almost. At £20 a DNT M40FM would be a great buy. Get the supertuned version though. I have put mine beside all but one radio of interest and it's still standing. The contender yet to step up is the Uniden Uniace 200. It's attractive looking 0.2uV sensitivity and equally impressive selectivity made it look very good on paper. Great looking set from most angles really. Big enough to sound ok too.

The Midland 77-805 Portapak has good receive on it, I used mine plenty and got brilliant results in the house or just sitting on the beach.
