i have seen they a while ago but today i noticed from the M55 there was alot more there now, there are 4 large masts and loads of small masts and what look like yagi beams,so had a drive to have a closer look.there looks like "long wire aerial" between the large masts plus loads of other aerial, too meny to count.has anyone got any idea what they are for? i was told it was to do with the air port it they are miles away and there are too meny for that.next time am up that way i will get a photo.

quote "The runway was demolished in the 1970s after the tarmac from it was used to build the M55 motorway, incidentally the aerials can be seen from the motorway. Today only the smaller taxiways exist to prove of the airfields former existence."

must have been one hell of a runway

I USED TO LIVE RIGHT NEXT TO HMS INSKIP IN A VILLAGE CALLED WHARLES DURING THE FIRST GULF WAR, IT WAS VERY ACTIVE THEN AS YOU WOULD EXPECT WITH ALL THE AIRWAVE TRAFFIC GOING TO SUBMARINES ETC IN THE MIDDLE EAST. SOMETIMES I COULD NOT USE MY C.B AS I WOULD GT 30+ OF QRM CONSTANTLY.THE LOCALS SAID THAT IT WAS ORIGINALLY USED AS A TRAINING CAMP FOR SPITFIRE & HURRICANE PILOTS DURING WW2, AS THERE ARE STILL SOME OF THE HANGERS ON THERE. I DONT KNOW ABOUT NOWADAYS BUT YOU WOULD OF BEEN LUCKY TO GET 100 METERS ONTO THAT BASE WITHOUT AN SA-80 RIFLE BEING POINTED AT YOU.

I have stayed at HMS Inskip on a number of occassions during my time with the Air Cadets. Around 10 years or so ago we got to have a tour around the comms site proper. It was all very interesting at the time. The mess gets used frequently by local golfers as a 19th hole. Had lots of fun their in Wessex and Puma helicopters too. At the time the old hangers and nissen huts were used for storage of our kit etc. I believe cadets do not use it anymore these days.

Boring, but true.

There was a great pub nearby called the Derby Arms, which was full of breakers back then. Had American number plates all over the walls and sold Harvey Wallbangers.

I went to a mass eyeball there after a big legalisation demo and convoy in Preston.

back when CB was a movement. not just a hobby, the good old days

on a separate note, the old airfield is barley noticeable as-such from the air these days. they really did a good job of removing it all! I love scouring Google Earth of old features like this, it's like time-team from your desktop! haha

There must be others on here who remember that demo convoy. I think it was in Spring 1980.
We all assembled at Burtonwood services. The place overflowed and there was a queue of breakers on the slip road in. There must have been at least 500 or 600.
We took the convoy through Warriington, Manchester, Wigan and Preston.
Then the Police asked us where we were going next. We were escorted through central Liverpool, and told over the CB to stick nose-to-tail and crash red lights right up Lime Street.
Magic days :D
